How to Keep Your CGM Patch Waterproof During Workouts and Swimming
If you or your child wears a CGM like the Dexcom G7, Omnipod 5, or FreeStyle Libre, you already know the anxiety of watching a sensor edge start to lift mid-swim or after a sweaty workout. The good news: with the right patch and a few simple habits, your sensor can stay secure through laps, soccer practice, beach days, and everything in between.
Why CGM Patches Fail in Water and Sweat
Most CGM sensors use a medical-grade adhesive that's designed to be water-resistant — but not necessarily waterproof under sustained activity. Here's what works against them:
- Sweat — salt and moisture break down adhesive from the edges inward
- Chlorine — pool water is particularly harsh on adhesives
- Heat — warm skin and hot weather soften adhesive faster
- Friction — towels, wetsuits, and clothing rubbing against edges
An overlay patch creates a waterproof barrier around the entire sensor, protecting those vulnerable edges and dramatically extending wear time.
What "Waterproof" Actually Means for CGM Patches
All T1DHeros patches are waterproof — meaning they won't dissolve or lose adhesion when submerged. However, no patch lasts forever under extreme conditions. Here's a realistic guide:
- Casual swimming (pool or ocean): A well-applied patch should hold for the full sensor wear period
- Competitive swimming or daily lap swimming: Expect excellent hold; reapply if edges lift after repeated sessions
- Sweaty workouts: Patch holds well; pat dry after exercise rather than rubbing
- Hot tubs and saunas: Heat softens adhesive — limit exposure and check edges afterward
Before Your Workout or Swim: Prep for Maximum Hold
1. Apply Your Patch the Night Before
This is the single biggest tip for athletes. Applying your overlay patch 8–12 hours before activity gives the adhesive time to fully bond with your skin. A patch applied right before jumping in the pool hasn't had time to set properly.
2. Use a Skin Prep Wipe
Products like Skin Tac, IV Prep, or Mastisol create a tacky base layer that dramatically improves adhesion. Apply, let dry completely (30–60 seconds), then apply your sensor and patch on top.
3. Make Sure Skin Is Clean and Dry
No sunscreen, no lotion, no bug spray on or near the patch site. These are adhesive killers. Apply sunscreen to the rest of your body first, let it absorb, then wash and dry the patch area before applying.
4. Press Down All Edges Firmly
Run your fingernail or thumbnail firmly around every edge of the patch. Pay extra attention to corners. Then warm the patch with your palm for 30 seconds to activate the adhesive.
During Activity
For most activities, you don't need to do anything special — just go. A few tips for specific situations:
- Swimming: Avoid touching or adjusting the patch while wet. Water makes the edges temporarily more vulnerable.
- Contact sports: Consider placing the sensor on a site less likely to take impact — the back of the upper arm is usually well-protected.
- Cycling or rowing: Watch for friction from clothing or straps. A patch on the upper arm avoids most gear contact points.
After Your Workout or Swim
- Pat dry, don't rub — rubbing with a towel is one of the fastest ways to lift patch edges
- Check the edges — if a corner is lifting, press it back down while the skin is still warm
- Let it breathe — avoid covering with tight clothing immediately after swimming; let the patch air dry first
Device-Specific Tips
Dexcom G7 + Stelo: The G7's compact profile makes it one of the easiest sensors to patch securely. Our round overlay patches are cut specifically to fit, with a window for the transmitter. Shop Dexcom G7 + Stelo patches →
Omnipod 5: The pod's raised profile means edge adhesion is especially important. Press firmly around the entire perimeter of your patch after application. Shop Omnipod patches →
FreeStyle Libre: The Libre's flat, disc-shaped profile patches beautifully. Great for swimmers since there's no raised transmitter to catch water. Shop FreeStyle Libre patches →
