How to Apply a Dexcom G7 Patch for Maximum Hold
Whether you're chasing after kids, hitting the gym, or just living your busy life, a well-applied CGM patch can mean the difference between a sensor that stays put for 10-15 days and one that starts peeling by day two. Here's everything you need to know to get a secure, comfortable hold every time.
Why Your Dexcom G7 Patch Matters
The Dexcom G7 is an incredible tool for managing Type 1 diabetes — but its built-in adhesive wasn't designed for every skin type, activity level, or climate. Sweat, water, body oils, and active movement can all work against sensor adhesion. An overlay patch acts as a second layer of protection, extending wear time and giving you peace of mind.
The good news? Applying one correctly takes less than two minutes once you know the steps.
What You'll Need
- Your Dexcom G7 sensor (already applied)
- A T1DHeros overlay patch sized for the G7
- Skin prep wipe or mild soap and water
- A clean, dry towel
Step-by-Step: How to Apply Your Dexcom G7 Patch
Step 1: Choose Your Site
The back of the upper arm is the FDA-approved placement for the Dexcom G7. Rotate sites with each new sensor to avoid skin irritation. Avoid areas with a lot of movement (like the inner elbow crease) or spots that rub against clothing waistbands or bra straps.
Step 2: Clean and Dry the Skin
This is the most important step that people skip. Body oils, lotion, and sweat are the #1 reason patches fail early.
- Wash the area with mild soap and water, then pat completely dry
- If you use a skin prep wipe (like Skin Tac or IV Prep), apply it and let it dry fully — about 30–60 seconds
- Do not apply lotion, sunscreen, or any product to the area before patching
Step 3: Apply Your Sensor First
Apply your Dexcom G7 sensor as normal before adding the overlay patch. The patch goes over the sensor, not under it.
Step 4: Peel and Center the Patch
- Peel the backing off your T1DHeros overlay patch
- Center the cutout hole directly over the Dexcom G7 transmitter window — this keeps the sensor reading accurately without interference
- Press down from the center outward to avoid air bubbles
Step 5: Smooth the Edges
Use your fingertip or thumbnail to firmly press down all edges of the patch, especially the corners. Spend an extra few seconds on the edges — that's where lifting starts.
Pro tip: Warming the patch with your palm for 30 seconds after application activates the adhesive and dramatically improves hold.
Step 6: Let It Set
Try not to get the area wet for at least 30–60 minutes after applying. This gives the adhesive time to fully bond with your skin.
Tips for Specific Situations
For swimmers and athletes: Apply your patch the night before a swim or workout. Overnight bonding time gives the adhesive maximum strength before it faces water or sweat.
For kids: Have your child sit still for the application and reward them afterward — making it a routine helps. Choose fun colors or patterns to get kids excited about their patch.
For sensitive skin: Look for latex-free, hypoallergenic patches (all T1DHeros patches are latex-free). If you experience redness, try a different placement site or use a skin barrier wipe underneath.
In hot or humid climates: Skin prep wipes are especially important in heat and humidity. Consider applying the patch in an air-conditioned room and waiting before going back outside.
How Long Should a Patch Last?
A properly applied T1DHeros patch should last the full 10-day wear period of your Dexcom G7 sensor. If edges start lifting before then, you can press them back down with a small piece of medical tape, or apply a fresh patch over the top.
